General
Choosing the correct size dog door depends on your dog’s shoulder height and width, not their weight.
Measure:
• Height: ground to top of shoulders (in some cases measuring from the elbow to the top of the shoulder will be fine if the dog is familiar or confident with dog doors)
• Width: widest part of chest
We recommend adding 20–30mm clearance so your dog can pass through comfortably.
If you have multiple dogs, always size for the largest dog.
In most Australian homes, the glass sliding door and the security screen sit very close together on parallel tracks. If you install a bulky, "universal" pet door, it will often protrude too far, preventing your glass door from sliding past the screen.
Petway Pet Doors are specifically engineered with a slimline profile to solve this exact problem. Because they are thin enough to sit flush against the mesh or grille, they allow your sliding doors to operate smoothly without catching or jamming.
• Security Screen Compatible: the petway slimline design is ideal for diamond grille, stainless steel mesh, and perforated aluminum screens.
• Smooth Operation: You won't have to sacrifice the use of your main glass door just to give your pet freedom.
• Australian Made for Australian Doors: Unlike imported brands, Petway is designed for the specific track tolerances found in Australian sliding door systems.
Yes! Most Petway Pet Doors are specifically designed for straightforward DIY installation. Whether you are fitting it into a security screen, a timber door, or a wall, you can typically complete the job in under 30 minutes with basic household tools.
• For Security Screens: Our unique "two-piece" frame design simply bolts together through the mesh. All you need is a screwdriver and a pair of snips or a utility knife to cut the opening and a spline roller. No specialized trade skills are required.
• For Timber Doors: We provide a detailed cutting template. If you can use a drill and a jigsaw, you can install a Petway door.
• For Glass Doors: This is the only exception where we recommend a professional. Because Australian sliding doors use Toughened Safety Glass, you cannot cut it yourself. You’ll need a glazier to install a new glass pane.
Pro-Tip: Check out our Step-by-Step Installation Videos on the product pages to see exactly how it’s done before you start!
Yes, but it requires a specialized approach. Because most Australian sliding doors use Toughened Safety Glass, you cannot simply cut a hole into the existing pane—it would shatter instantly.
To install a pet door into glass, a professional glazier must replace your current glass panel with a new one that has the hole pre-cut and toughened at the factory. This ensures the door remains safe and compliant with Australian Standard AS1288.
